Default Something wrong or expecting too much?

I like the car so far, 2001 m6 ss cme. But for some reason the car seems like it should have more power than it does. Sure it'll roast the tires from a stop and clutch pop, but seems pretty dead from 2nd gear into 3rd. I'd expect it to break loose in 2nd if I stab the throttle.

We need more info before we can help you. It might just have some serious meat on the back...

Don't question traction. You have NO idea how many people on this board have wet dreams about having traction in 2nd gear.

Its all stock except a k&n filter. Tires are not a sticky drag radial or anything.

Are you saying you think it should break the tires loose from a second gear roll? If so that's not going to usually happen with a stock LS1. If you are referring to the second to third shift not being that strong then may it's your clutch. Who knows...

cruise in 1st to about 2500 rpm, then nail it. i bet it gets ugly real quick. shift hard to 2 with the rpm up and i bet it smokes em again. If not you may have a tune up issue. Mine has a few mods and a tune with 333 rwhp and it wont spin on some good asphalt with my z rated tires sometimes.

I just checked that, floor mat and carpet "might" have only been letting it go 90%. Still a dog, stomped on it after moving in 1st, little rubber, then shifted@ 5k+ into second, little rubber. ASR is off, no codes. It runs and starts good. I'll buy some Maf spray tomorrow and clean that.

I've been reading about plugs etc and I came across fuel pressure. Normal is 58-60 psi? The autometer guage in my car reads from 30 to 40 psi. Guess I need to check into that.

This is the correct answer.

A stock LS1 isn't going to roast the tires by any means from a WOT roll already in 2nd gear. You may be looking for a problem where there isn't one.

That fuel pressure does sound low. But I would double check the accuracy of that gauge before tearing into the fuel system. Sounds like you've recently bought this car, so you don't know if you can 100% trust what that gauge is telling you.

Yup only had it 2 weeks. Just starting to tinker. Maybe I'm chasing my tail. I'm comparing it to a high 12s car, which on a good day/driver these cars are I've read. So far not even close to the same feel.

I wouldn't use traction as a comparasion though. Too many variables. I have had high/mid 12 second cars that would not break the (street) tires free from a WOT punch in 2nd gear.

Two cars can run similar times but "feel" different. Power bands/torque curves, gearing/stall speed, weight transfer, etc.... can all effect the feel.

Wouldn't hurt to verify fuel pressure with another gauge though. There might in fact be an issue. But even if there is, don't expect to be roasting the tires from a 2nd gear roll with stock gears, decent tires, and no power modifications.

yea thats low. verify with secondary guage. auto parts stores rent out guages btw.

a couple cheap/free mods will also make it feel better, better throttle response makes a BIG difference in the way it feels. msd wires and ngk plugs would be where id start

Had a chance to check today, put a guage at the end of the rail, at first it read 40 psi but when I started it it read 60 steady. Guess the guage or sender are junk.

I cleaned the maf also, that did feel like it made the car crisper and a little more power, less bog.

I will be buying ngk tr55s and some wires next, by pass the coolant to the throttle body etc.

Many will tell you not to do it, but popping the screen out of the MAF is a big throttle response jump, at least it did on mine.

Do not de-screen your maf. That screen is there for a reason.

I descreened my MAF without any issues because the honeycomb was bent all over. Didn't notice a difference in response but that screen is there to help straighten the air flow before the MAF meter.

You should always do a basic tuneup (plugs/wires/air filter/oil change) on any used car you buy before testing performance.
