275/40r17 vs 285/40r17
so its about time for 2 new tires, the rears as they sit now, I have 17x9.5 wheels all around, with 275/40r17 tires all around as well, my questions are is the price difference of the 275 compared to the 285 worth it, any issues I may run into going to the 285, (car is stock body and suspension wise) and is 285 the biggest I can go on a 17x9.5 wheel? also any reccomendations for a 285 or larger if possible tire that doesn't cost 3 or 4 hundred bucks is appreciated as well. currently running falken ziex series fwiw
also this is my dd as its my only car so the tire needs to be all weather capable with a good tread life

I tried to put 285/40/17 on all four corners with a set of TTII 17x9.5" wheels with a 46mm offset. This did not work in the front at all, the tires would rub badly on the lip of the bumper cover (where it wrapped around to meet the wheel well liner).
285/40/17 in the rear was no problem at all on these wheels. But I had to go back to a 275/40 on the front.
If you have a wheel with a less aggressive offset, you might be able to get away with the 285s up front. I've read about others doing this without issues on the narrower stock 17x9s with 50mm offset as well.
FWIW, this was with Goodyear GS-D3s, which tend to run wide for their size.

well if I go with 285's they would be for the rear only, I plan to keep the front at 275, that was my biggest concern was if they would rub, so i'm guessing realistically 285 is the biggest I can go with this rim size

Yea 285 is the biggest i'd do on that size wheel altho i did put a 335 michlen on my 10.5 ttm's but as a dd i don't think you'll gain much off the bigger tire. it will be a bit taller and wider. But again sounds like somthing i would do

I've been running 285s for the last two changes. GS-D3s
and then Cooper Zeon 2XSes.
Downsides include much more limited selection, and a
need to run higher pressure to keep them from being
"squirmy" - which then leads to center wear with the
edges still good, somewhat shorter life (unless you
like "squirmy").
But they look pretty good and give a little more patch.
Bigger might end up looking like clown shoes depending
on how oversized the tread is, to the rim.
I'm sticking with the size, moving on to NT05s since
Cooper quit making the version I liked and Goodyear,
forget the pricing. We'll see how the squirm & wear
goes, this time around.

yeah I had those gsd3 eagle f1's on my 02 firebird they were 255's and looked almost as wide as my 275's that I have now, I loved those tires but i'm not in any position to shell out 700 bucks for 2 tires right now, if I was i'd have those all around again, ive been considering these, they have a 4.5 out of 5 star customer rating, come with the road hazard warranty and don't cost a ton, anyone have experience with these?

Is the height difference running the 275s in front, and 285s in back, within the built in tolerable variance of the stock ABS system, as far as the computer is concerned??
Or will the ABS/brake idiot lights be constantly on with this setup???

I had the 275/285 combo for a couple years, and never had any ABS/PCM/idiot light issues of any kind. It didn't even have any noticeable effect on my WOT shift points (auto trans).
