Default Buying CTS-V

Looking at a 2004 V with 101k miles. Price is around 13k. First off is this a good deal? Car seems to be in good mechanical/visual shape.

Sounds about right. I've seen one for less money, but it was beat.

Make sure the differential has been replaced already lol

Otherwise when you start to have "fun" with it, it'll pop.

how should the rear diff look if it has been replaced? Is there a casting number to look for? Car is at a dealer. Thanks for the info.

Unfortunatly the part number is printed on a tag, that is facing, of course, the underside of the car. It's a pain in the *** to read.

If it's at the dealer, take a look at the carfax. Most dealer servicings are listed on them, and something major like that could have either been replaced under warranty if it popped early enough.

Most chain automotive places have a free "X point inspection" and you can take it to them, and when they put it up on the lift, ask to take a look underneath. Most will let you. Tire Kingdom did for me a few times.

Take a look at this pic to get an idea of where the lable is for the differential part number. This is how it would look if you were able to look down at it through the car.

Good luck

I would pass on it if the rear hasn't been changed to an 06/07 version. Unless you don't mind buying/replacing it yourself.

I have the Gen 3 diff (PN 15793756), and it seems to be holding up just fine.

i wouldnt think the diff matters too much. if your going to put down gobbs of power your going to need an 8.8 swap anyway.

Seems like a good deal.. If the diff is the stock one then maybe just get one off Ebay they go for about $500.

Look at the inner fender wells on the front, Make sure all the trim is there and in good shape. The cheap plastic push pins/snaps come out at high speeds some times. Check the interior trim in between the rear windows and the back window those are notorious for breaking cause they catch wind with the windows down. Listen for when you turn the car off if you hear a rattle. If it does rattle you need new motor mounts.

All of the things I listed above were thing that were wrong or went wrong with my car. Don't let any of these keep you from getting the car they are all fixable. But maybe you can get the dealer to lower the price a if you do find some little things you are going to have to fix. I got my 04 V with 88k on the clock for $13,995 three years ago and I love it.

The crappy rear is just something you have to live with in these cars. If you do plan on doing tons of mods and making crazy power then plan on an 8.8 or 9 inch swap also.

Are there any mods on the car already?
