Default Corvette wheels on a third gen

what kind of spacer is needed to do this safely and properly?

That depends upon the what Corvette wheels you have.

It depends on the size which was already mentioned. The fronts usually need a 2 in spacer if going with a standard 4th gen size wheel, 17x9. If you have a stock rear you will also need a spacer of 2 in if going with the 17x9 rim. You could possibly use a 1.5 in spacer in the rear. If you have a 4th gen rear in the 3rd gen then no spacer needed for the 17x9 wheel since the rear is a total of 4 in wider.
