Default LS noob question

I'm on a budget build due to the fact I am also house hunting.. I came across a deal on a motor for my camaro roller. It's 1500 for a low miles LQ4, comes with ls6 valve springs, ls6 rods, ls6 cam, ls2 timing chain, ls6 oil pump, slp header back exhaust, ls1 heads and 317 heads. I can't really have anything else ported right now due to saving money, but what head combo should I run with the stuff I mentioned earlier? Car will be dyno tuned once it's all together.

I'd run the 317's. if you can swing milling and a vj in the budget you'd be good to go

Its kinda like a double edge sword here. You can put the LS1 heads on and bump up the compression but then you have a little less flow than the 317 heads and they lower the compression.

I say run the LS1 heads so you bump up the compression because you won't even use the extra flow of the 317's with just an LS6 cam.

Is there really much of a difference in horsepower? I intend in using a turbo down the line in 2 to 3 years.. But how drastic is the power difference for now going with the LS1 heads as opposed to the 317s?

In going with a turbo the dish of the LQ4 is going to keep your compression low 9.4:1 with the 317's and 10:1 with the LS1 heads. 10 might seem high but not in the LS world. It was back in the SBC world that 10:1 is high. You have a very efficient head compared to the SBC is the reason you can get away with more compression. I don't think you will see much difference in power from the 2 with that setup. Now if you were building a 370 with a custom turbo cam and a GT91 turbo in front, then that would be a different story.

Okay, so long story short, putting the LS1 heads on now instead of the 317s will do nothing. Especially if I plan on an STS in the future. Correct? Thanks for all the help man

Well I have both heads and plan on a turbo in the future.. Al just glnna run with the 317s rather than have to rip the motor apart again in 2 to 3 years
