Default Widening wheels - safe?

I'm the lucky owner of a CTS-V, the worlds hardest car to get aftermarket wheels for. I hear of people getting their wheels widened but part of me just cant stomach cutting a wheel in half then welding it and praying it stands up to abuse. Thoughts?

I had my silverado wheels widened 2.5" and ran 325 drag radials for 3 years, no problems.

Get a professional to do it and you should have no problem. I am going to get a set widened, haven't yet. I work in ship repair and am fairly knowledgeable about welding (we do a little bit ). I am not worried about the welds failing. I would be more concerned about shoddy fit up. That is why I say hire a professional.
