Check out this write-up to gauge whether or not you have the right tools, parts, and mechanical know-how.

From what I've heard it can be a pretty unpleasant install if you don't know what you're doing.

Have you ever installed gears before? If not, I recommend having it done professionally.

Why do you want to install 3.42's? You will most likely see absolutely no gain in 1/4 mile times. The car will feel faster and pull a little bit harder. The only thing you'll gain is a SOTP feel and you'll lose 2-3MPG in fuel economy.

I know A4 cars with 2.73's running high 12's with just catback, intake, and tune.

2:73s to 3:42s in a A4 is like a M6 car going from 3:42s to 4:10s. Its one of the best mods you can do. Ask any 6 speed ower. Ive had 3 of them.

My uncle went from 2:73s to 3:42s in his A4 corvette, BIG difference.

Umm no. While it is true that 2.73s can go a long way, they will drop your et slightly. And the MPG drop is not that severe. I went from 2.73s to 3.73s and could hardly tell a MPG difference.

I would go to 3.73s before I'd waste my time with 3.42s.

2.73 to 3.42 is definitely not the best mod you can do for an A4. Gears are a big deal for an M6, but for an auto your money is better spent on a stall.

A 3500+ stall will be worth significantly more ET reduction (sometimes double or more) than a 2.73 to 3.42 swap, assuming full traction in both examples. And once you install a 3500+ stall, a 2.73 to 3.42 gear swap won't be worth more than about a tenth or so.

what do you mean 'try everything to make it work' ?

Factory 3.42s' out of a camaro/firebird will not work with a 2.73 2 series carrier, you would need a 'thick' aftermarket 3.42 gearset. OR also change the carrier to a 3 series carrier.

Well the.bottom line is 2.73s are just no "fun". It feels like you accel slow, the 2nd gear lag is unbearable. No sotp at all. Practically have to power brake to spin tires(if your in to that ****). I was not impressed at all when I first bought my car. ETs are one thing...but so is having fun while just crusing.
Sure a stall would be the best for performance, but throw a higher stall in a 2.73 geared car and its now loose as ****, with little throttle response and no dd sotp..unless your close to wot blast everywhere you go. 3.73s truly did on a make the car fun as **** to drive comparably to the gm gas friendly 2.73 pitch. It does feel 2x as fast. Any other ratio I'd get a stall....but the 2.73s are a must to swap imo

You must've had a very weak stock car then, or possibily drag radials? I've owned a couple of 2.73 LS1s, and had no issues breaking 275mm tires free from stop or slow roll, even at just lid/catback level.

Picking the right stall for your usage and combo can make the car much more fun for street driving as well, if you're looking for a performance gain. Plus there is no MPG loss once you're in lock-up.

This is largely a matter of personal perception. It's really not that bad at all, IMO. I would say that it's only slightly more noticeable than with 3.23s, so long as you're using a high quality torque converter.

Don't do gears yet, get a converter first. I would only do gears if you changed the cam, then you would want the gears to supplement the converter into getting into the powerband better plus tighten up the converter feel.

DAMN your car is quick! Low 12's with only a few bolt ons, stall and DR's?

I can definitely tell that the launch is what helped your car the most. 109MPH for a 12.2 pass is a little low, but a 1.7 60' is sick. What was your 1/8 mile time on tha trun?
