I have heard of people putting 295's on stock rims, but I would be afraid of it being unsafe. Most people run the 275 on stock wheels.

You can run 285's if you can find them...kind of an uncommon size.

Stock WS6 wheels are 17x9", and you can fit a 285mm on these wheels without issue. Some people have issues with wheel well clearance using 285s up front, but in the rear it would be fine.

285/40/17 was the factory rear tire size for many years of C4 production, so there are a couple of manufacturers that still make this size. I believe both Goodyear and Nitto have models in this size, there might be others as well.

i dunno...

Goodyear has the F1 GS-D3 and Nitto the NT555, both in the 285/40ZR17 size, but their charts list wheel widths of 9.5"-11.0"

http://www.nittotire.com/Tire/nt555

how bad is it if you ignore that half inch?

^^^It's NOT "ideal" (a 285/40-17 on a 17x9), but it is doable.

I would definitely NOT go ANY wider than a 285 on that wheel though.

I think the 285's would be fine, but I would run it in the rear, with 275's up front. This car is running that setup...
