Default Best Head Cam combo selection?

97 t/a ws6. Headers, ram air and 3" exhaust. stock bottom end. what is the best head cam combo besides 1LE's? I was thinking about a set of trick flows or AFR's with a cc306? looking for the 425hp neighborhood. This is based on a little research I have done. . . . . Thanks for the input! (I need it!)

Trickflows and AFRs are both good choices but don't be so quick to discount ported factory castings. Lloyd Elliot and Advanced Inductions can do some amazing things with factory castings usually for a really good price.

I would have to sternly advise against the CC306 however. It's not that it doesn't work but there are SO many better options out there and custom grinds are really becoming the way to go.

1LE got the exact same heads and cam as the rest of the f-bodies.

If you mean LE1 then you are picking the entry level head from the "budget" porting shop but then expecting a top of the line dyno number.

As cast aftermarket heads are not going to do the trick either, ported could be another story but catalog aftermarket heads hell no.

Basically you are way off base here, play with simple boltons for now and then MAYBE next year revisit this idea. Car needs a LOT of mods before heads and cam anyway.

My car has "catalog" aftermarket heads. I'm pretty sure I hit those hp numbers and then some.

100% untouched aside from a valvespring swap. AFR heads come fully cnc'd right out of the box.

My point was that 96capricemgr thinks that getting 425hp out of a head you can buy from Jegs is impossible. If it doesn't come from AI, he thinks it's worthless. I'm sure a nice 12-1 355LT1 with AFR race ready 210's would crush those hp numbers with room to spare.

Sorry Joel, I'm on your side of the argument. I should've quoted what I was responding too. Fixed it.

Agreed that out of the box AFR heads can do amazing things. 12:1 355 sure. But 425rwhp on a stock short block with HCI. That'd be a pretty interesting build. You would need a fairly small chamber to get the compression you would need.

Truth.

Very doable now that you make that distinction

Then what is your suggestion then? I mean it seems as if i just need to stay stock? I told you my goal. . . . . . soooo what heads and cam do you have on your vehicle? what bolt ons do you have? Give me more than what not to do. . . .

he is good at doing what you just seen. he is USUALLY correct but he comes off so rough. PS i cant tell you what he is gonna say... it'll be advanced induction this and advanced induction that and of course full bolt ons and a big stall ... but really if your lookin for 425HP and not 425REARWHEEL HP then your goal is fairly easy.. full boltons a decent sized cam and a set of LE2 ported stock casting heads would be more then enough

I would also suggest ported stock casting heads with bigger 2.00/1.56 valves...LE, AI, or Lingenfelter...and you don't need to go wild on the cam. I like smallish durations in the 22X/30X range with a lift around .570". The stock castings, when ported correctly, and matched with a nice smallish duration cam, keeps air velocity up and helps create nice low end torque and good hp while not having to spin the thing to the moon to do so.

My old 383 ran Lingenfelter/Eric Bradby ported stockers with the bigger valves and a Joe Overton/Erson custom grind 226/234 .568" lift little cam..That set up work also work great on a stock motor, 3.73s (26" tire) and a 3600-3800 converter. I ran 4.10s with 28" tires and a Vig 4000 and drove it everywhere.

The new owner runs a Vig4400 and has just added a 100 shot. It runs 11 teens N/A with 1.47 60's..Its a blast to drive. Should be interesting on the spray...

Good luck with your car!
