Default opinions on gears grinding

my buddy just got a 98 z28 with 130k for fairly cheap...runs and drives great, but the trans grinds going into 2nd, 5th, and 6th.. i havent driven it yet, but he says its really hard to get into 5th.. would it just be syncros? i know its impossible to know until its taken apart.. just trying to figure out what direction we need to go, he wants to rebuild it.. any help would b great thanks

I would try bleeding the clutch hydraulics first, along with a fluid change. Try the cheapest things first. If you have to tear it down, I wouldn't be surprised to find some broken fork pads, and at least the 2nd gear synchro pretty worn. Some t56's go a long while without issues but you're probably going to find some wear on everything.

you can try bleeding it but it sounds like a good time to rebuild with some upgrades
