Default Questions about mystery noise.

Hey guys, When I am driving my 05 V on the highway (anything over 50) I will hit a bump and all of a sudden this high pitched whine comes from the front of my car. It will continue until I hit another bump then it will stop. If I do not hit a second bump and I slow below 40 it will go away. I am thinking wheel bearing but would like your expert opinions. Also what is the cost of having them replaced vs doing it myself. I am also 100% positive it is not the rear or transmission.

Thanks.

If it is a wheel bearing when you hear the noise sway/slalom back and forth a little, left then right etc. If it is the bearing, the noise should change. It will change to the side you are loading. Example: you turn right (shifting weight to the left side) and it goes away, it is the left bearing. You turn left and it gets louder or stays the same it is the left bearing and so on.

My money is def on wheel bearing.

Thanks for the response. Is it easy to do yourself or am I better off taking it in?

If you have basic mechanical skill changing the wheel bearing is easy.

Wheel bearing is tied into the hub assembly if I recall correctly. Removal of wheel, caliper, rotor... and then the hub is a quick thing. Honestly took me about an hour to do both the front hubs with hand tools, but thats because everything went smoothly, and because I was familiar with the job.

So you do have to replace the whole hub? I went into vatozone and they said it was all one assembly. I figured I would check back with you guys before I order them.

The wheel bearing/hub is one piece. Sealed bearing with self contained abs sensor.
