I am getting ready to remove the t56 tranny from my 01 camaro ss. Can the tranny be unbolted from the bellhousing or should the bellhousing be unbolted from the engine and pulled as one unit? Thanks for any advice up front guys!

Pull the transmission from the bellhousing, then the bellhousing from the engine. There are 8 bolts for each, and the top ones can be a PITA. Get your socket extensions ready

Sometimes I found it easier to remove the shifter and get inside the car to undo some of the top bellhousing bolts.

Going to be doing this myself as I just bought a 78k trans to swap mine with.

My concern is that I'll be working on the street, and getting the car high enough so the T56 can slide out. Can't say I've ever jacked a car 2 feet in the air, lowering the trans down will be interesting too. I'm limited to 2 regular small jacks and 1 large shop jack.



Great video, thanks a lot!! Wow so much simpler than I anticipated, my console is already off so thats one thing. Hopefully I wont have to remove the exhaust- things always go to hell with rusty bolts.

Floor jacks just aren't quite as nice when dropping (or reinstalling) a transmission. It can be done, but if you grab a 20% off coupon and apply it to the sale price, it might be worth looking into.

As long as you have about 3-4 feet of extensions on hand, it really isn't too bad. A wobble extension might come in handy too (you can get those cheap at HF as well).

when we pulled my brothers trans, we just sit the car on 4 ramps. Worked really well till we got the trans down, then we had to jack up the front a little more to pull the trans out from under the car.

I got the transmission out. I found someone who let me use their lift to do it. Once I removed the crossmember and dropped the trans down I was able to get to the top 2 bolts pretty easy with the extensions. I really appreciate all the help you guys give me. I've tore the tranny apart and am in the process of rebuilding. Wish me luck! LOL
