5.3 Build, BW S400SX Choices
Hey folks,
I've been chatting with a couple of you, thanks Stock 48 and Martin, and I've decided to go with the BW S400 series T6 turbo.
From the FI website, I've sorted the variations from 75-80mm compressors.
Car is a 69 Nova, runs 9.40's with a rat on spray. I'd like to equal or improve the performance which means I'll need approx 850 at the crank. I know...easy with a turbo.
TH400, 3.42 gear planned. Currently has 3.73
I will buy the turbo from this list that will get the desired results.
So, opinions on which one to choose?
The L33 will be stock bottom end. Ported 799 heads. Thinking I like the Edelbrock intake and 90mm TB. But not at all opposed to using the truck intake. Exh manifolds of course.
Martin will design me a cam.
I played with the BW MatchBot program, pretty useful, but doesn't have but a few compressor maps to choose from. Too bad.
So turbo selection guys, what do you think?
Ron

I wouldnt use that turbine with a drag race oriented car with a transbrake.
The plain cast 80 with an 87mm turbine and a 1.10 t6 would work.... If you like big nasty sounding cams....put the 96/1.32 on it and hammer it with the cam.

Thanks. How did that choice work for you?
From things I'm reading, the turbine is best chosen by experience, of which I have none. Might require a change after the initial choice?
I'm in the same boat, I don't want the car to be a stone then explode from 4500 - 6500. I'd prefer something thats strong from 3000 - 6000, then figure out the converter/gears to get the ET.
Mid nines would be awesome, but 10 flat is a fun ride which is where I'm at w/o the spray on my rat. And to be honest, I haven't ran the gas in quite some time...tends to scrape up the rear bumper too much.....

Ron do you want a turbo you'll never have to upgrade or what will work for now while trying to get your feet wet?
I match my valve timing to compressor and turbine selection as well as aspect ratio.
My absolute favorite combination for a 5.3 is a s476r or s480, billet compressor wheel, race cover, 92mm turbine t6 flange and 1.0 ar housing. Unfortunately it is also the most expensive. The 1.32/96 combo is by far the cheapest most effective, but you not having a trans brake worries me although it could be made to work without one.
A 87mm wheel, t6 flange and 1.10 AR housing with the 76mm "R" compressor and race cover would also be a cheaper alternative.
The cams we've been discussing for a pt7675 wouldn't be optimal for these turbos.

Thanks Martin.
Did I forgt to tell you guys that I'm a millionaire with a day job just to keep me from getting bored?
So, this sounds like the one I'd like.
S400SX-76R CAST* 1150 1.10 87mm T6 $1,199
I realize this will be a diff cam, I was listening! Turbo first, then cam.
If this will make me smile, let's talk.
