For a simple fluid and filter change, 5 or 6 quarts will be enough. Note that the trans and converter hold about 12 quarts, but only about 4 to 5 quarts will be in the pan. Some trans shops have a machine that taps into the cooling lines to replace nearly all the fluid. Not sure if that is even a good idea though.

While I use Dexron 6 (GM's recommendation since around 2002, all synthetic) many (most?) builders don't think it is worth it at double the price. I don't think brand matters. If you decide on Dexron 6, shop around. My local stores charge nearly $9/quart, but my local trans shop buys it for $4.50/quart. Check Amazon - I now see "Castrol 06822 Transmax Dexron VI Automatic Transmission Fluid - 1 Quart, (Pack of 6)" for $38, which would be perfect for you.
