Default Help me with my converter purchase!

So I am going to buy a Yank SS3600 stall converter tomorrow and spoke with someone over at Calspeed in regards to it. He recommended that I get a trans cooler, shift kit and possibly a tune. I want to get it all done right, so does anyone know where I can get a good trans cooler or a shift kit for a decent price? Also, my car has been acting sluggish. For instance, when I put it in reverse, the rpm's drop to were the engine almost wants to shut off. Also happens when I put it in drive. I figure a good tune would fix it? I am possibly thinking about a mail order tune to help fix this. I am somewhat of a budget, any input will be greatly appreciated!

With any high stall converter, a cooler should be considered an absolute necessity. I don't know what model works well in a 4th gen, but hopefully someone else will post the known solutions.

A tune should also be considered an absolute necessity.

A shift kit is optional. While the Transgo HD2 is a good/best shift kit at $80, a trans shop will probably charge you 3 hours labor to install it.
You would get a lot of benefit from just a .500 boost valve which costs $25 and takes barely 5 minutes to install (after the pan is off). For a pre-2005 trans, the Sonnax 4l60E-LB1 (.490 boost valve) is the best choice.

Note that your shifts will feel much softer with a high stall converter, even with a shift kit installed.

If when you ever have your trans rebuilt, have the full HD2 shift kit installed, high RPM springs and all.

Your near-stalling probably is not related to the transmission. It is likely an engine sensor. There is a slight chance that the lockup clutch is dragging due to a bad converter (which you are replacing) or a leak in the trans valve body, which can be fixed without removing the trans.

Dont need a shift kit, a competent tuner can get your shifts right. If/when you open your trans, that would be the time for the shift kit. As for a cooler the B+M 70264 is a great entry level plate cooler with everything you need to install it.

I have a Hayden 30k gvw cooler plumbed in series after my in radiator cooler (BeCool rad). I shoehorned it in front of the AC condenser. Im pretty happy with it, temps stay 20-30 degrees below engine coolant (160 t stat) the hottest trans temp I have seen is 186 with the ac on and 100 degree heat. 36-3800 stall on mine.

That said, my radiator has much more capacity than OE so YMMV. If youd like a couple of pics let me know. It doesnt fit great, but it works well and is out of sight.
