Default Got my 5.3 where to start

Hi guys new to the site got a 5.3 out of a 03 avalanche 92xxx miles got it for $335 this thing is clean!!!





Plans for it is to be street strip motor 400 at the crank is the goal where do i start what cam, heads, going to be using an ls6 intake what injectors should I use anything else I need? Sorry for all the ?s but im new to lsx's and motors in general ive swapped heads, intake, and carb on an older sbc and no I dont want a shop to do the work I want to learn

So far ive already stripped off the accessories, exhaust manifolds, intake, cleaned the valve covers this is going into a 3rd gen camaro Ive done the research on what I need for it to fit so got that part covered

car craft magazine tested every factory lsx cam in a 5.3 and the factory ls2 cam made 400 hp 400 tq at the crank ! you can get factory cams pretty cheap around here. but they is a lot more power to be had from a aftermarket cam

Think im going to do LS6 intake/cam/valve springs/pushrods with Lt's borla exhaust and a CAI

Baseline 5.3L LM7 Made peak hp 353 @5200rpm Peak TQ 384 @4300rpm

LS1 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 382 @5500RPM PEAK TQ 389 @4800RPM

LS2 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 403 @6100RPM PEAK TQ 399 @ 4900RPM article said this was the only cam they had valve float with past 6100rpm

LS3 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 405@ 6100 RPM PEAK TQ 398 @ 4900RPM

LS6 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 376@ 5900 RPM PEAK TQ 389 @ 4500RPM

LQ9 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 376 @5900RPM PEAK TQ 389 @4500RPM

L33 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 362 @5300 RPM PEAK TQ 387 @4500RPM

LS7 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 422 @6300RPM PEAK TQ 395 @5000RPM

LS9 Cam in the 5.3 LM7 Peak HP 420 @6200RPM PEAK TQ 393 @5100RPM

here are 3 custom cams they tried also !

duration 200/200 Peak HP 380@5400RPM PEAK TQ 401 @4700RPM

duration 210/218 Peak HP 411 @6000RPM PEAK TQ 406 @4700RPM

duration 224/232 peak HP 442@6200RPM PEAK TQ 412 @5000RPM

I hope this helps !!!! of course they changed the springs out to accommodate for the higher lift cams. you can get those factory cams cheap on here.

Gm claims baseline on this motor is 285hp at the flywheel(lm7 out of 03 avalanche) how the magazine got there baseline test i dont understand

they took the LM7 and put it on the engine dyno ! all LSx motors are under rated

Take for instance the ls1 is rated at 325 flywheel and it puts almost that to the rear wheels of a Fbody

Would a ls6 rods and springs handle the lift of an ls7 cam?

Gm did it for insurance purposes I would imagine !

Not sure about the ls6 rods and springs. Use the Search they is a ton of info on this forum.

budget just doesnt allow for a turbo build just yet and ig ill just have to dyno it for sure after its done
