Procharger boost loss question

Default Procharger boost loss question

I have a stock motor/d1 combo. Last time I looked and when it got tuned a few months ago it made just under 11# on my gauge. I checked it on a 4th gear pull and on my boost gauge it only hit 8#. I was told the boost loss was due to the temperature change. It was probably 45ish when I got it tuned and was 85 today. Is this possible that the temp caused the boost loss? I'm going the check belt tightness when I get home but its never been a issue before and don't see any belt dust on anything.

You'll loose a bit. I have hit 15#'s of boost when it was about 40 degrees outside, but would barely hit 11#'s when it was 90. So I would say its probably the temp. Try running it early in the morning or late at night when its cooler and see if you gain a little more boost, that will tell you for sure.

Good idea and sets my mind at ease a little! The 4th gear pull was after driving it for about an hour in 85 degree heat.

With a centrifugal style supercharger, it won't be affected by the heat soaking that a roots style will. So it doesn't really matter if you railed on it under boost for an hour straight, it should perform the same. Its the outside air temps its pulling in that will dictate the amount of boost it will be able to output.

And boost gauge doesn't jump around like I would think it would if it had belt slip.

You'd see belt dust if you had belt slip, plus you'd likely see the boost suddenly plateau while the RPM's continue to climb.

I really think your boost loss is caused by temps, but if its not there are other things besides belt slip that can cause it.

A boost leak, BOV problems, supercharger starting to fail ect.

I'm thinking (hoping) its temps too. I'm going to take it out one night when it's cool and see what happens.

You don't even have to wait until its "cold". If it hits 85 during the day, it probably cools to about 65 at night depending on where you live. You will see a difference between 65 and 85.

Humidity makes a difference as well. Just pick a night this week that is coolest and has the lowest humidity.

www.wunderground.com has everything you need to check the temps, and humidity level per hour for your location.

3 psi drop? Doubt it would drop that much from temp differences. I'd start by checking all your connections.

Looks like it was a faulty gauge or maybe a crimped/broken line going to boost gauge. I havnt dug into it yet. Loged it last night and map 2 bar came out to 179 kpa which comes out to 11.4# of boost.

Well, the important thing is that you are not loosing boost, but more likely a faulty gauge.

What kind of boost gauge are you running? Mechanical boost gauges have been known to be innacurate (I run the more expensive electronic boost gauge). The vacuum line should be easy to trace to verify there are no kinks and the connections are solid.

It's just a cheap mechanical procomp gauge. I'm going to chase the line for the gauge tonight but I most likely need to just buy a new electronic one like you said.

I have a sport comp one. I think they run $150-$200 but they are very accurate, and have some nice features like a boost warning light and they can recall your max boost level.

Max boost is a good thing to recall. Ill look them up tonight.
