This is on the 3.4L so sorry if this is in the wrong section. I have a brunton stalker with a 3.4L in it. In the past month or so I have had a belt squeal getting worse and worse. I have tried numerous belts, changed the alternator and the balancer pully. It has just gotten worse. The weird thing is, it will only squeal once the car is up to temp. I'm starting to think its the water pump. Any ideas?

Idler pulley maybe? when you changed the serpentine belt, did you also change the ac belt? I just changed both of mine yesterday and that stopped my morning squeals.

Try some baby powder on the belt. Should help you narrow your search depending on how that affects it.

I've had the same problem on my brothers 98 mecham ta. It has a 4 port heat extractor hood and previous owner said it was from water getting on belt but it did it dry and was really inconsistent. Changed belts still there. New alternator still there. 4 new idler/tensioner pulleys still there and now powerbond 25% with new belts and still there. Its not there all the time but comes and goes. Kinda annoying

A/C compressor.i changed all kinds of stuff only to have the damn a/c compressor lock up. Car started bucking like a mule and died. Than it hit me. Climbed my fat a$$ under the car on the hot black top, cut the belt and continued on my way with no squeeling and sweeting.

Have you changed the tensioner? If its weak it will let the belt slip causing it to squeak.

Baby powder just gives the belt grip and temporarily shuts up the noise. It helped me maintain my sanity until I could swap out alternator pullies. I used it because of a number of threads on here that recommended it in tracking down the problem area. Do a search. But like others have said, my money is on the tensioner or idler. If the bearing is dry in the idler, you can repack it with grease yourself and see if that helps any. That is also in a thread on here.

Buy a mechanics stethoscope, might help you find it without anymore major expense.

I used dish soap, got the belt wet with hose water than applied dish soap than washed off. Repeat, it went away.
Don't spray directly on the alternator.

i would have the cooling system pressurized and checked for leaks. also undo all electrical grounds and power wires and clean the connections really well because corrosion can form causing unwanted resistance in the cables. the extra resistance could be causing the alternator to have to work harder, the magnetic resistance from the alternator will make the belt slip around the alternator pulley. i have seen this a few times on vehicles that come into the shop because the belt will not stop squealing. clean you power wires and grounds and also get the cooling system pressure tested. Good luck on narrowing it down
