Thanks Doug, this is not my first post like it says. I have a complete "build thread" somewhere on this site just cant find it, havent been on in a while. I was able to get it fired up this week with MSDs "curve1" pill and i am not happy with that idle timing. I will build a custom curve today and install it and see how she likes it. She wants to idle at 900-1000 rpm... There are alot of factors that need adjusting though, just havent had time. Planning on ordering a FAST A/F meter next week to bring in this tune faster than last time, 2 years...

Lots of guys have complained about the "stock curve pills" MSD supplies.
I'm not sure on your cam size, but mine idles in the 950 range also. I tried to get it down some but it just doesn't like it and I'm sorta use to the 1000rpm idle of my old 406ci SBC solid roller.

The cam is Comp Cam 301LRR HR-115
300/316 @.006 .624/.624
Pretty healthy stick and I'm thinking 1000 for idle will work. Should be out at TRRP in two weeks, just need to work tune this weekend after I get the FAST A/F meter in. I have a consertive custom curve built that I will be running at track.

Default Tuning

Idle set at 900-1000 and it sounds comfortable there. FAST A/F meter hooked up three days ago and began tuning, that meter does not like open headers. I installed some 12" turnouts yesterday and will run again this evening to see if it is a steadier read. I have been wrestling around with jets and man was i way off in the beginning, i currently have 80 front and 84 rear and it seems to be clearing up. Probably have to install new plugs today. Also installing Moroso battery box in rear and running cable to front, not easy... Once battery is installed i will head out and make a "hit" with the A/F meter recording, fingers crossed.

Finished up rear battery box install and was able to fire her up and take a read with the 12" turnouts installed. Wow what a difference the pipes made! I went from an erratic read to a very steady read and also able to see idle now. Before, idle was reading 21 continuous, which i knew was wrong and now it is reading 16-17 and that is where it is staying. Still don't think that is a true correct read. I will down jetting again because mids are around 12-13 as well as highs, but not after a street run read. I was not able to get out and run her down the road yesterday and now that the open header tune is just about complete all the neighbors are on edge. I may wait until dark and run tonight... Defiantly running her at the track next weekend June 28! Thunder Road Raceway Park

Did you have any start up problems? I'm trying to get my 408 started...seems I don't have enough cranking speed? Did you encounter anything like that?

Had that problem last year also, I changed the starter and fixed it. I guess it was not spinning enough rpm for the crank trigger to read it but that did it.

I'm running the all mighty junk yard stock starter and haven't had any problems yet! Actually this has been the easiest build, startup, and break in I have ever accomplished. I don't think I will ever build another old school SBC or BBC again. I was able to take her out and make two passes today before work and all I can say is crapolah! I have never been behind that kind of power, can't wait for Friday night test and tune.

The little rat motor ran 11.0@124 twice Friday night with temperatures at 95+ degrees. Very happy with results, but I know she will bust that 10 second barrier next time out with a little more tuning. Time to install a line lock, ran into burnout issues on third pass and called it a night.
