Default Ouch! T-56 Carnage Pics Inside

So, as I said in the other thread, my trans went out this weekend. I tore the rear off and things didn't look good at all. I had a chance to finish the tear down and it's really not good at all.

So, first I found that the 5/6 driven gear came right off by hand, no need for a puller - NOT GOOD. Mainshaft needs to be replaced with the 5/6 driven gear. I pulled the 5/6 cluster out and found the really bad part...the countershaft broke two of the five drive splines (for the 5/6 cluster).

I got the case apart and found that indeed, the 3/4 syncro retaining spring came apart and locked up the trans while driving at 60 MPH (which is what sheared the countershaft splines). If this were a lighter car, it probably would have locked up the tires and sent me in a ditch.

So, the factory 2.97 ratio countershaft is about $900...a new 2.66 countershaft and 1-3 gears and syncro's come to just over $1,200 for these parts alone. Called the local junkyards and one that had one (Ripple's in Upper Marlboro) wants $5k for a 50k mile 2005 CTS-V trans...good ******* luck with that one. RPM came in at about $3200 shipped for a Level IV with core charge. Weighing my options at the moment....

Damn it didn't look that bad in the other thread. Are you still sending it to Tick or are you going to do it yourself?

Tick only does rebuilds and mine needs just about everything...mainshaft, countershaft, 1-3 gears, 1/2 and 3/4 syncro's assemblies (for different gears), 5/6 driven gear, and whatever else. Think I'm going with the RPM unit since they can source a new one with a $750 core charge. I'll have something on the way by the end of the day one way or another.

I didn't know our trans was so expensive. I would think with a zillion T56s out there parts would be cheap.

We have a specific use mainshaft, and our cars came with the 2.97 ratio first gear (same as the C5 Z06) making the countershaft and 1-3 gears and syncro assemblies a rarity. These two specific parts make our trans unusable for anything else and non-interchangeable with 90% of T-56 transmissions out there.

RPM said almost every component in our trans is good to 700 ft lbs...doesn't take much to toughen them up for higher rated use. End play and billet keys are the main upgrades.

I saw a bunch on Car-part for less than $2500. You may want to check there to see what shipping would be. Shouldn't be too bad.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/pts/3878087020.html

This guy has a couple of the parts. Don't know if it will help but he has had these on CL for a while and may come down a little.

What are the RPM transmissions rated to? I went on their website and $2800+ for the level 5 isn't Terrible if its over 1000whp+ capable but still that's pretty spendy

Got a price for a TR6060 conversion good for 800+ ft lbs and warranted for 12 months...$4k and about 6 days lead time.

Gotta try one last thing before I pull the trigger....

They only consider the case a core. Everything internally is replaced including te front cover. So, exchange with fluid and shipping works out to $3995.00.

Why don't you call The Gear Box. I get all of my tranny parts from him. Great price and sometimes they have used parts.
