Best Trans for drag racing 4l80, turbo 400 or powerglide?
My 02 camaro has a 4l80 in it presently but I want to get a little faster with my 1/4 mile ET. Would a turbo 400 or glide be better. Car weighs around 3500. Ls1 408ci with turbo. Around 980rwhp.

If this is a street car, keep the 4l80 in it. A TH400 would save a few pounds, but has the same 1-2-3 gear ratios.
IMO, if you ever sell it, a 4l80E will make it more valuable as it would be more suitable for street use.

So I take it the car has to shift into 4th to finish the 1/4? If you do a powerglide swap (Which I would recommend) you would need to change the gear in the car as well. You are not going to hit 155 with a 3.73 gear in the car. 3.25 would be alot better gear for a big cube turbo car.

What is your race weight?
Unless you are minding race weight of the vehicle i would not try to move a lot of mass with a glide. If you're full street attire with full interior keep the 4l80e.
obviously the previous owner had to put a bit of money into the trans in order for it to hold together.
Keep what you have, go on a diet, or more boost. If it ain't broke dont fix it

There's plenty of data to indicate the 4L80E doesn't have any significant effect on ET compared to a TH400 or other trans in most combos.
Nic D (tuner) did some testing of a 4L60E vs. 4L80E and showed very little RWHP loss that was posted on PT.net about a year ago.
We have gone from a TH400 to a 4L80E and actually had a slight improvement in ET and MPH in one of our customer cars.
Most cars with any decent power (500+) will respond better to the 400 or 4L80 gearing than the 4L60E.
Typically most cars that weigh 3600+ like a 4th gen will not respond well to the Powerglide gearing until over 1000 HP range.
A 4L80E weighs ~178 lbs without converter. Converter weights for a 4L60 and 4L80E aftermarket converter of the same diameter and configuration will be very similar. A 4L60E weighs around 140 lbs, TH400 is around 135.

I wonder if i should swap to 4l80e transmission
I have the th400 and the Cadillac 429 v8 big block 7.0 liter.. I dont think it hits 17 in a 1/4 mile

Leave in the 4L80E. Very little (if any) to be gained changing transmissions here, and or rear end gear change. As mentioned earlier, tune, more boost, and "possibly" a different torque converter.

Noticed you didn't share the short times... I can appreciate wanting to keep it secret. How well is it getting out of the hole? How strong does it pull through the 1/8?
Are you spinning? Can you push more boost? How does boost ramp up?
First I would look at tires, especially if the 60' isn't where you need it. Then how well the suspension is dialed in. Then stall vs peak torque rpm. Then power production and boost control (if the motor can take more boost).
