Can I or should I use my fbody shifter cup?

Can I or should I use my fbody shifter cup? I put a 04 GTO T56 in my 02 Formula. I see where everybody gives advice on buying the adapter cup for fbody. But I have my old T56 sitting here with a 3rd gear bent slide fork. I don't see why that shifter cup would not work.
