Default Absolute speed stg 2 5.3 heads with 978 springs ??? About settin up valve train

Should i need shims or not ? I am running stock rocker arms the heads are 5.3 l heads unmilled ... i started puttin the car back together last night with shims jay gave me but it just didnt seem right .. After tightening the rockers to 20lbs you could move the rocker arm back and forth with little force on the spring .... Without using the shim and tighting down the rocker with my fingers using a socket the pushrod was compressing down .... Are shims useally required for a unmilled head ? The only difference i can think of is i am using fel pro gaskets and i heard they are thinner

With unmilled heads and a stock valvetrain, I wouldnt use any shims.

you should check the install height on the springs... should be 1.8 for those springs...

You should call jay, because i think the reason he gave you shims is because the valves he uses are longer than stock. I'm not sure if he does this with the stage 2 but i would call him

I just called Jay (since I have some Stage II 5.3s on order). I was going to go the 977 / CompR route, but Since then we have changed to the 978 route. My cam is just under.600/just over .600 and he feels that it will be ok. He is going to send shims though as he says that it will set the geometry up correctly.

BTW .. he said no extra machining is done for these springs .. does this sound right?

Hope this helps ..

I didn't get any shims with mine . So it must be due to my smaller cam?
