Default Carbed 4th gen cowl

I've been doing a lot of searching on here trying to figure out how much clearance is needed to fit a carb on a 4th gen and haven't really had much luck. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever taken any measurements or anything of exactly how much space is needed. I'm hoping that if the carb is turned sideways and the k-member spaced a little bit maybe there won't be much trimming to the cowl needed if using a carb hat. Any ideas? Thanks.

I had a carbed sbc and 6.0 in a 95 z28, the sbc allowed me to run wipers, the 6.0 did not. The cowl I had was 2.5 in the rear and threw a small goofy air cleaner on. A carb hat would also clear and looked better. They make a SS hood on steriods that fit on 1cdubs carbed 454 lsx, cannot say what air filtration was on it.

The one example in town I has seen had to cut approx a 4x4 square cut into the cowl

Damn, I really like the idea of a carb'ed LS in a 4th gen but I don't want to have to do to much cutting. If I knew exactly how much space is needed I could figure out if it's even possible. I'm not worried about the hood but I love a modified car that's streetable in any weather, which isn't possible if the cowl is cut off. I have this idea to modify the engine mounts on BMR's new k-member if it doesn't need more than an inch...

I was thinking more about the whole no wiper thing with having to cut the cowl for a carb'ed LS. Did you just knotch yours or cut the whole thing out? Thanks for the info.

Notched with a sbc, lost wipers with a Ls. You could probably get creative to make the driver side work. But rain x was a friend when in need.

You'll have to cut the cowl with a carb hat on top. I'm not running a carb but my set-up I had to with a Vic Jr, nitrous plate, and 4150 throttle body. A carb will most likely sit up just as high. With the carb hat, it's sticking about an inch and a half over the cowl. It won't clear. However, cutting the cowl won't mean you can't run windshield wipers. I cut mine and I didn't have to get rid of the wipers. Just be careful not to cut the hose line for the windshield washer fluid.

Problem for us carb guys is the rear fuel bowl is where the wiper needs to be. If you put the carb sideways, you can go lean at the track because of fuel slosh. That is not normally a issue with jet extensions but with the carb sitting sideways I'm not sure how you could prevent it.

You could run side hung fuel bowls with the carb on sideways. Eric L

That answers for the float, but what about fuel sloshing out of the jets that are at the front? Is there a different metering block that I am not aware of?

This is some good info. So putting the carb on sideways can cause lean issues during hard launches? Hmmm, definitely something to keep in mind. I read there is somewhere to get carbs from for running sideways. What's different about these carbs that allows for this? Is it just the jet extensions?

When a carb is straight th extensions in the rear keep the jets in fuel, side ways you would have to make something to allow the "front" jet in each bowl pull fuel from where the fuel will be sloshing to the rear. I cannot figure out how ro make that happen.

So you could keep the wipers without the plate?

Stock hood with wipers no nitrous plate and you have to use the smallest air filter you can finds that doesn't bog you down, I used the smallest Mr.Gasket filter I could find at oriellys.
