Default LQ9 4L80E converter spacing?

I've got an 02 lq9, and a 96 4L80E, I got it fired up, trans topped off and it started leaking ATF from what appeared to be the pump seal.

Pulled trans today, got a new seal, but before I throw it all together I wanted to confirm my spacer is correct.

My setup, is as follows.

Crank
Flex plate
Spacer
Then converter.

As it sits, the converter gets pulled maybe 1/4 into the flex plate, but it's not forced onto it.

So, that correct? And seal was bad, or did I set it up incorrectly....

Thanks in advance

It depends on what flexplate you are using.

A stock OEM LQ9 would be crank, spacer, flexplate, converter. The stock LQ9 flexplate would be flat, not dished.

I believe it's flat, technically it's from an LQ4. It's now an LQ9/ls2 with my pistons. Typed out of habit...

I'll take a pic this evening to confirm.

Sounds like you have the OE flexplate setup and it is correct. But some pics of everything would help us male sure. And I would add some shims to get the converter spacing closer to 1/8".

Pix.

I didn't get a change to pull the flexplate off tonight, but it appears the spacer is between the crank and flexplate.

Unless I've got the wrong spacer. From what I'm remembering it fit inside the flexplate and acted more as a centering ring for the converter.

Alright, put it all back together..

Replaced the seal. Here's the gap between converter and flexplate converter fully seated.

Then the same pic, but with some grade 8 washers between the converter and flexplate.

I put it together like this, broke the engine in, and drove the truck around the yard yesterday.. No leaks. Guess the seal was bad, or the converter was just a hair too far out.

Good, looks like everything is correct. I would guess about .150 spacing on the converter now, so that is good. Hopefully it was just a bad seal like you said.

Who knows, it'll work till I step up to the new converter. Thanks for your input.
