I wonder how much stronger a 9 inch really is in our application over an 8.8 inch. I doubt anyone has the money to do both but dang, sure would be nice to have a comparo between the two.

kinda wondering the same thing, A lot of gto owners have the 8.8 and are doing fine run 9 and 10 sec 1/4. They are about a 100lbs lighter but shouldn't be that big of a deal. Would like to see some long term testing with the 8.8 how it holds up at the track.

Well that was helpful.

The 8.8 has one problem, and that is the ears breaking off. I suppose if I was making a bunch of power and chose to go the 8.8 route I would look into maybe building something to help support the front ears (mounting tabs).

As far as internals of the Diff goes, I bet it would be very very Difficult to break either one. Drive shaft still has U-joints (high HP breakable) and CV's are rated to 1000 HP but they will warranty any breakage so....please do!

That is my take on the whole thing. Then there is the price gap (approx 2k ) and the waiting period for the 9" is long! Where as i think creative's 8.8 is two weeks now? or less? So...hope that helps!

Lets get some videos of this beast already!!! Hell, just some underhoods and a start and rev would make me happy!

I think most of the ear breakage could be solved by using a iron case and some solid mounts?

I may be getting the 9" for less than the 8.8 costs new, and would do my own pumpkin and DS so that would hopefully be a big help with the turn around time...

But I did find someone who has been having a bad experience with the 9", waiting to hear how that works out for them.

I will get videos by this weekend...

I was going to say I never read of that happening in a cobra.... then I saw this post... must be a rx7 thing.

t's the way it was mounted. The support and structure needs to be ABOVE the nose of the diff, not below it. A couple of washers on top of the bushings won't f$%king cut it. Cobras with factory engineered subframes 1000 pounds heavier making twice the power of your car don't have that problem... guess why.

Don't blame the diff housing, it isn't at fault. If you want a subframe that won't cause that to happen, shoot me a PM.

Most 8.8 failures in cobras tend to be carrier related. I shot the spider gears out through the cover on my original rear in my Cobra.

The subframe in the rx7 leads the 8.8 swap to crack.

They want rediculous money for the 9in when really it's just a custom housing with ears to fit our subs welded on. The partial kit 8.8 wasn't too bad and I got my iron housing for 75 at the scrap yard.. Found an explorer and pulled the carrier.. Put the cobra carbon discs in it and 3.55's. set it at .008 back lash and she hasn't even whined a bit. Also running poly front bushing and a braced rear cover.
