Default Tiny little piece in U-joint... what did i break?

This little clip/thing broke while i was trying to muscle my driveshaft out of my 99 z28. Do I need it? What is it? Can i get a new one?

That clip holds the two bearing caps on. Pull on the cap and it will come right off now. Mine did the same thing. It's just there to keep the caps from falling off when you have the DS out. I just put mine back in without that piece and no problems.

Default cap retainer for ls1 ds

I bought a used 02 ls1 shaft for my 91 z and when I was checking the u-joints one of the little ears on that retainer broke. Searched the net for a replacement but found nothing. Sounds like it is not needed except to keep the caps from falling off. Any other opinions to the contrary?

That strap is put there by the OEM driveshaft supplier. It keeps the caps in place while the bare driveshaft is shipped from the driveshaft factory to the assembly plant and onto your car. If you see those you still have the factory u-joints in your driveshaft.
