Your opinion on the best gears?
Hey all,
Im kinda a newb when it comes to rearends. I am currently getting my 97 T/A WS6 stroked to a 383 with all forged internals. My current gear ratio is 3:42. I currently live in St. Louis but I am originally from Mississippi. I go home once or twice a month. Its about 315 miles one way. My question is what gears are the best to fit street and strip without getting like 6mpg. I was thinking 3:73 and a known rearend builder suggested 4:10. Is 4:10's too much? Thanks for the help!

4.10s are really short gears. with enough power, youll be shifting into 5th in the quarter mile. higher RPMs on the highway also mean itll be a loud ride the whole time. if you want to make it a drag car first and a street car second, 4.10s are the way to go. but if you would like it to be a street car most of the time and a drag visitor here and there, I think 3.90s would be the way to go. if youre making a whole lot of power, 3.73s, IMO. Because most people on the streets race from rolls when you have upwards of 600rwhp. Im talking 60 and 90mph rolls. with 3.90s and definitely 4.10s, youll run out of gear about 120, then youre in overdrive aka 5th gear.

I would like it to be a street car first. I will probably hit the track every other weekend or like once a month. 4:10's Seem to be a bit much for what I want to do. Eventually I would turn it to a bracket car (not until my pockets get deeper). This would be a weekend driver plus a day or two to work. So, would 3:90's or 3:73's be better? Im not trying to get 30mpg but not trying to filll-up twice just to make it home. Usually takes a tank to make it......

Depends on how much power you're pushing. I think 3.90s would be great, those are the gears im getting installed in my street car in which I also only plan on visiting the track a few times a year. Don't get me wrong, 3.73s could be the gear for you. But i think for a minor bolt on car, 3.90s are awesome. With a cam and intake build, complete monster. If youre looking to boost the car, definitely 3.73s. Youll have so much power with a turbo or s/c build that youll run out of gear quick with 3.90s, losing enough top end that I think 3.73s would be justifiable. Its all in your wants and needs.

3.90s are nice, that what I have in my car now.
Here's a comparison of the 4 different gear ratios at roughly the same mph, with a 25.66" tall rear tires.
3.42 = 1800rpm at 54mph in 5th, and 80mph in 6th.
3.73 = 2000rpm at 55mph in 5th, and 82mph in 6th.
3.90 = 2100rpm at 56mph in 5th, and 82mph in 6th.
4.11 = 2200rpm at 55mph in 5th, and 82mph in 6th.

Look at F-Body.org for a good gear calculator. 4.10s are perfect for a LT1/M6 combo, low revs in 6th with the overall 2.05 effective ratio and able to trap 112mph at 6k in 4th (26" tire) through the lights at the track. I kinda wish I had gone with 4.30s.
When I had a 10 bolt I used AAM gears and they worked good and were quiet. My .02

IMO going from 3.42 to 3.73 would be a waste of time and money.. you at least need 3.90's but id go with 4.10's.. but then the risk of blowing your rear increases.. we have a 6th gear for a reason.. get krunk man!!
