Default Opinion on 6.0 project

I picked up a 2004 LQ9 with 92k out of a escalade. Assuming it does fine when I do a compression test I am deciding what to do. I will probably install it in a 2000 TA. I already have a FAST 90/90 setup I am planning on putting on but don't wanna spend a ton of money. I was considering pulling the heads (317's) and doing a light port/Polish and having the machine shop mill them a bit to raise compression (as opposed to purchasing heads as I think it will be cheaper as my labor is free and I figure milling them shouldn't be too expensive. I am also probably going to purchase and install a moderate cam. I was thinking of 224/224 ish. I want a cam that has good power throughout the entire rev range and not just peak numbers, and would idle fairly smooth. My 2 questions are basically

1. How much can I safely mill the heads to raise compression a bit ?
2. Knowing my vehicle/weight and that I want a broad powerband that I could use as a daily driver that idles well is the 224 in the ballpark ?

P.S. I am guessing that combo may get me around 400-430 rwhp. Does that sound about right ? Assuming it is tuned correctly.
Thank you
Ron H.

Sounds about right.Id suggest talk to some vendors on cam specs for your needs.I think from 224-230's will make good power/torque through the band and still drive nice and easy to tune.Milling the 317 heads is a good idea..not sure how much to take off on them but i took .030 for my lq4 build with 243 heads and used stock mls gasket. The fast 90 setup will compliment you and assuming you back it up with good exhaust setup you will meet your goals.

My setup isnt much money in it with smaller intake than you, bigger cam choice, milled 243 heads non ported or polished, and stock manifolds.I idle at 800rpm,get decent mpg,and nice power curve all the way to 6600rpm limiter

If you're staying NA, then I would look to get 11.0-11.3 compression ratio. Assuming stock LQ9 rotating assembly and OEM head gaskets, I estimate that you'll need to get the heads to the 61-63cc range. That is a lot of milling for 317's and may cause intake fitment issues.

I would pick up some used 243 heads and do a 0.020" clean up mill. Measure the volume with oil and medicine dropper to be sure before you install.

Good luck, take plenty of pictures.

224 is a good all around cam a lot of truck guys use in their trucks which are a bite heavier I personally would go 228-230 type cam in the car.

I think that cam with with at least 11.0 compression would easily put you in the hp range that you have predicted, and would be a very streetable and fun setup

I did a compression test which isn't 100% accurate as my gauge isn't holding pressure but all the cylinders were moving gauge to 180 psi except 6 and 5 which was 155 and 160. Debating at this point if I want to pull apart and re-ring or not.

Ok nvm. I bought a new gauge and they all read around 210 psi it just took those two cylinders an extra rotation or so to get to full psi. So everything seems ok. I may keep an eye out for some 243/799 heads if I can get a set cheap.

i wouldnt skimp on the heads man the whole reason for a 6.0 and stay n/a is to have better options for heads. but i dont think unworked worked heads and a mid sized cam is going to get you what you want, you can do a lot better, just my opinion.
