How long will a new motor use oil?

How long will a new motor use oil? My new motor has about 1200 miles on it. It's been using a little bit of oil and I wasn't sure if I should be concerned or not. It gives some smoke at wot also. It used a quart this weekend in about 250 miles.

Maybe your rings didn't seat properly. Noone can tell me that it can't happen to a new engine, it happened to me with my brand new 436 stroker.
Do you blow clouds of smoke when you hit the gas while driving? Do you get a puff on start-up?
