Default 408 stroker?

I'm looking into buying a 2002 Trans am with a 408 to truly figure that part out is to check the internals. My question is how can I identify what block is installed? Tho the seller might be telling the truth. If I'm told the car has a lq4/9 I want to also have a better peace of mind and verify that it does. I know you can add ls1/6 heads and intake and it would just look like the original ls1.. Thank you for any feed back

A magnet will at least tell you if its and iron or aluminum block.

The block should be painted black as well...I believe.

Directly underneith the driverside head, if its an LQ motor it will be stamped 6.0 on the block. Can't miss it. Power steering pump might be I'm the way to see it though. But if a magnet sticks its deffinatly not an ls1

My 383 would pass the magnet test. Hell, even an un-modified 5.3 (or 4.8) would be impossible to distinguish from a 6.0 block except for the "6.0" marking vs the "4.8/5.3"

check for the 6.0 mark to be absolutely sure. it will be under the drivers head on the front of the engine, or under the passenger head on the rear of the engine.

All this is true. Check for dyno numbers as well. Lol
