Default t-56 : f body vs gto

Guys, I need a t56. I found a gto trans for 1500 bucks, seems kinda steep to me but is it worth the coin? Thats no bellhousing, just trans and shifter, its from an 05 gto ls2 powered with 43k. He promises it works. Is the f body t56 better for a muscle car application, are there any drawbacks to getting a gto t56? Or should I look for a stock f body t56 and get it built from there? Let me know what you guys think. I read that the gto trans has a sloppier feel to it and the t56 is a better trans especially if strengthened.

Well first off a gto trans is actually a t56. As you can see below the gto has a steeper gear pattern for a little heavier car. The only draw back is the t56 for an fbody has a close ratio gear set whereas the gto has a wide ratio between 2-3 however that wouldnt stop me from getting one. 1500 seems ok to me because thats what i would expect to pay for a good fbody one with a bell and the gto t56's command a premium for their synchro design.

The gto t56 uses a triple cone synchro design in 1-2 and then a double cone for the rest whereas the fbody uses a double for 1-2 and single for the rest. This translates into smoother faster shift for the gto. The sloppy notion for a gto comes from the fact the gto shift sucks, once you put on an aftermarket shifter it become like any other t56.

If you wish to make it into an "fbody t56" in terms of fitment for a car all you need to do is change the shifter and offset lever which is around35 bucks. The gto bellhousing should you find one will work with a gto starter or you can just get an fbody bellhousing.
