I blew my rearend and my **** was really fucked. gears were chewed up and had been moving inside. I may have some pictures from it. I went to my local junk yard and found a complete axle from a 00 trans am. cost me $375 + 2.5 quarts of Royal Purple 75W90 gear oil, some high temp RTV gasket maker and about 10 hours of my time to swap the old one out and the new one in. I've got 11,000 miles on it since march and its been great. It also has crap 2.73 gears which I plan on swapping out when I redo my suspension.

The reason I did not go with a rebuild kit and some one to install it was all the shops here wanted $500-$1000 to do it.

or just by a 12 bolt or 9" haha

Watch those cheap GM posis. I've heard they are POS. They go under the nickname Gov-Loc. Get something with a brand name, Zexel Torsen, Auburn, Tru-Trac etc.

There is a reason why their nickname is the Gov-bomb. I bought an Eaton and never looked back

If your looking for a shop to do and if the one guy is right about it costing $1000, have you looked into the 8.8 build? Some guy just finished one for $1600 and that is with a shop doing a lot of it. He also had a lot of extras added on so I'd imagine it'd be around $900 to $1000 for the 8.8 as well. I know if my 10 bolt blows i'm going the 8.8 route.

If you only replace the posi, you need to inspect the gears and bearings carefully to insure they have not been damaged. Any 7.5/7.625 28 spline 10 bolt posi will be a direct swap in.

Sorry to thread jack but I have a question from a friend that is getting a Moser 12 bolt and he needs to know which Axle studs to order?

the available options are:
12mm x 1 1/2 (.505" knurl)
12mm X 2 1/2 (.505" knurl)
1/2" x 20 x 1 1/2" (.620" knurl)
1/2" X 20 x 3" (.620" knurl)
1/2" X 20 X 2" (screw in)
1/2 X 20 X 3" (screw in)

He'll be running stock axle lengths and everything just upgrading from a 10 bolt.

You cannot bolt right in completely . The bearings look to be pressed which is good or bad if you don't know if they are good bad china ect.... but you still need to set backlash side play pinion depth....ect . Thats why there is shims in the box . I think that's the question you are asking .

Replacing the whole rear with a junk yard rear will save you time and money!
