Default Clutch/pilot bushing questions....

I'm in the middle of a clutch swap.the stock pilot bearing was completely screwed up, no needle bearings were found. I want to go ahead and polish the input shaft out, was the best way of doing this, regular sand paper? And when installing a pilot bushing, which side faces the crank, the smooth side or the with kind of a slope on it.

If you look at the pilot bearing, the side that looks like the bearing assembly was pressed into it, that faces the engine. The side that looks enclosed faces the transmission.

Why not a roller? Anyways the tapered front is the side that faces the tranny.

The way the roller blew apart pretty much did it for me, don't want to mess the input shaft up anymore then it already is...

if input shaft is not FU you can use emery cloth to clean it up

use a wood dowel to drive the bronze pilot bushing in. it is soft metal

also confirm you don't have slop in your input shaft (front bearing)...which can kill pilot bearings

FWIW Tremec advises using bearing vs bushing on the T56

Thanks, ill check out the emery cloth. I've read alot of post about using the bushing In place of the bearing. From my understanding and from I read, they both have there pros and cons. The bearing can dry up and fail, taking the input shaft out with it, the bushing will just wear faster. I have no problem replacing the bushing every 15xxx miles.
