Found some metal... can it live very long?

Default Found some metal... can it live very long?

I just bought a c5 Z06 with 44k on it. I decided to change the trans fluid and bleed the clutch so after draining the fluid I find that its black and has some fine metal particles in it. Well I kind of thought to myself maybe its normal but in the bottom of the oil pan I used I found a decently sized couple pieces of metal. Close to the size of pencil lead. The transmission works flawlessly. No whine, grinding, hard engagement nothing, perfect. Is it possible this is just maybe the corner of a gear and it'll still live a normal life or should I expect failure soon? I've shifted it hard several times 1-4 and not had an issue either. What do you think?

Probably chipped gear teeth. I wouldn't expect it to fail. It is was making noises (Bearings), than I would be concerned.

(No offense, but I'm not sure if you are serious. I am answering as though you are.)
Van, The hydraulic system and the oil pan are not sharing fluid with the transmission. Finding shavings in the hydraulic fluid reservoir could evidence wear and bleed-by within the Master Cylinder. Shaving in your oil pan would evidence wear in the engine. To check the transmission you will need to drain the trans itself. It is also worth using a magnetic drain-plug to help catch some of this in the future. This will make the presence of metal in the fluid easier to see.

I mean I changed the actual transmission fluid. And after that I blead the clutch. The metal was in the actual transmission case like from a gear not the reservoir for the master. The clutch hydraulics is irrelavant to the actual problem. The way I worded it I understand the misunderstanding.

That info sure provides better clarification. If you aren't seeing issue with shifting then you can certainly hope for the best but I also advise planning for the worst. Eventually you will need to tear it down to take a look and determine if there are any other issues.

If your trans has carbon-particle friction linings the carbon wears into the oil and it will be dark/ black. So that should not draw alarm in itself. Not sure about bits/ chunks...maybe chipped teeth/ clutch tooth bits. At the very least, its good you got them out of there and you have fresh oil.

He seems to reference chunks though and that wouldn't be normal of lining wear. Especially if the chucks are metal. Van, are you certain that the material is in fact metal? You can check with a magnet.

It was probably 3, 1/2 inch long pieces about the size of a pencils lead.

I'm not sure if I still have the pieces. I'll check and see but I'm pretty confident its metal.
