Default Oil Temperature Sensor going crazy!

Hi guys,

I have searched and found some info about my problem but wanted to see if anyone had any other thoughts to make sure that this issue isnt serious and wont cause damage.

My oil temperature gauge just recently started getting a high temp reading and going off. My engine temperature remains normal when this happens. I checked the oil and it may be half a quart low. There did seem to be some smoke/ vapor come off the dipstick and out of the dipstick hole when I checked it. I have read that this issue could be something to do with the grounding. This is the only thing that I have found. I am considering trying to replace the sensor since it is only $40. Another piece is that the temp only fluctuates during stop and go traffic but remains consistent on the highway.

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. and sorry for such a long explanation!

Thanks,
Everyone

Fix the ground connection under the hood strut.

Wire brush everything clean and add a star washer under the bolt head.

This will likely fix it. Mine hasn't fluctuated at all since cleaning the grounds and adding washers.
