Default l33 cam help!

ok so here is the deal. i have a 96 chevy s10 that im putting in a l33 with ls6 intake. the plan is to make 400 rwhp. im looking at cams and im down to 2. the tsp 224r or the comp exr 222/224 .581 .581 112lsa the thing is i want a usable power band 2k-6k but have it still make good power. and i do need to point out its a t56 so dont ask about what stall im using. i want a good cam 2k-6k powerband and have it not jurk the truck at low speeds. so im open to what you have to say.

The cam I run would be a decent set up for you. EPS 218/226-.595/.598
Call Geoff Skinner at EPS for a suggestion or click on the icon to the right of
these threads and just navigate through their website..I think it's even called
the truck torque cam. You could also call Martin at Tick performance...he has
some real good insight for valve events as well.

5.3 with a LS6 intake will never make 400rwhp with those cams.

It MIGHT make 375-380 with a Polluter or T-rex type camshaft.

400 rwhp is just a goal i want to make. the l33 has the 799 heads (ls6) heads - the light whight valves. and im putting a ls6 intake, high flow fuel rails and a cam. i would hope with a good tune that i would be in the 380+ rwhp. but i have been reading on this site for a long time and i cant find any cam for a 5.3 with a manual trans. all i keep reading is ( how much stall do you have or thats to much stall for that cam) what about a manual? just looking for some advice here.

My 2007 LS4 (FWD aluminum 5.3 w/ 799 heads) has an LS2 Intake/TB/Injectors, 224/232 camshaft (New Era High Lift DoD camshaft), LS7 exhaust manifolds, 12# aluminum flywheel, and a 6 speed manual (in a fiero) and it dyno'd 382 whp @ about 6800 RPM and 335 wtq at about 5000 RPM. It also gets 29 mpg on the interstate (about 2000 rpm @ 70 mph).

However, my camshaft is installed advanced an insane amount (double digits) to get the power band as low as it is, so I would recommend getting another camshaft more specific to the 5.3's.

I run open loop 100% to reduce the o2 sensor induced surging, but it runs smooth 99% of the time. As long as there is some load on the engine, it doesn't surge/buck, but at a very light throttle (and before DFCO kicks in) in the 1200 to 1800 rpm it can be made to surge/buck. Its much better since I dropped timing in those areas, but I can still make it do it.

The valve events on my cam as installed with the insane advancing (everything at .050 lobe lift):
IVO (BTDC): -3.5
IVC (ABDC): 47.5
EVO (BBDC): 46
EVC (ATDC): 5.5

MTI Stealth II 224/220 (everything at .050 lobe lift) - IVO, IVC and EVO are all pretty close to my as installed camshaft.
IVO (BTDC): -4
IVC (ABDC): 48
EVO (BBDC): 46
EVC (ATDC): -6

thank you (FIEROGURU) for the input and dyno# did your ls4 have the flat top pistons like the l33? just saying thats good for about 5-10hp.

still looking for more input on this topic.

where do yall think the tsp 224r will get me? i hear this is one of the biggest and best recominded for the 5.3l? i know this cam will pull well into the 6800rpm range but is it good at all for a light truck on the lower end?

fill free to give other cam input.

I have personally seen a l33, with ls6 cam, ls6 springs, ls6 intake and a tune make 394hp on a engine dyno. to get rwhp in the 400hp area as u are already looking at bigger cams, also headers, bigger tb, injectors, so on. I think its possible on a na motor on pump gas. keep us informed.

thank you for the input on that. sorry i did not note all my mods. yes i have headers, yes i will be getting bigger injectors and i will be getting a 88-92mm tb. and true duel 2.5in exh.

like i said i know 400 rwhp is a on the pike of a n/a 5.3 but i want to try. it will be a built mini ls6. just trying to find a good cam for a dd that will work with a 6speed.

i know the ls6 cam is a good smooth cam along with the ls9 cam. just looking for a bit more of a pull.

anyone got a cam that fits this bill?

Yes, the LS4's have the flat top pistons.

I would just get a custom cam spec'd by one of the sponsors designed around your performance goals. There are not many off the shelf cams designed specifically for the 5.3L.

it looks like i might have too. im just on a budget and i only want to have to buy a cam once. this being my 1st build i have never bot a cam so i dont know what durasion or lift is too much or too little. today is also my B-DAY
!!!! and i want to take advantage of texas speed's sale on cam kits. gift to me

Here is an article where all the stock LS cams were installed in a 5.3L engine and ran on the dyno, as well as a few aftermarket ones. It should give you an idea of the potential power band for each and help you decide on what range of duration you are looking for.
