Default An aluminum cookie pan, 8 rivits , a pair of tin snips,and....version 2.0 added!!.

a need for some cooler air for my engine. I noticed a steady increase in the IAT on the hand held for my Fast EZ EFI the other day while checking the AFR. My inlet temp climbed from 78* to 100* during a 5 sec full throttle pull ! this is what I did about it.

I had to find something laying around for the body of the cold air inlet. I had found a couple cookie sheets a while back and kept them for sheet aluminum for what ever. I set it where I thought it should go and marked and cut the hole for the throttle body.

I decided on the shape I wanted and went to work forming the bottom pan, leaving the sides full length to be cut down later.

I slowly trimmed the sided a little at a time, lowering the hood to check my work. After about 10-12 times of cut and check ,I finally got the piece fitting with a half inch clearance all the way around the hood. I used pipe foam to make the seal with the hood. I cut my 14" filter to fit in the recess at the back of the cowl, so I could filter the air going in. Everything seals up nice and tight and you can hear the air pulling in from the rear of the cowl.

I did a quick test just sitting at idle with and without the cold air pan. 91* was recorded with the air ..uhhh...kit? in place and 112* without it. 20* sitting still is a pretty good result, but I think going down the road is going to show a much bigger difference. Maybe in the 40* range. If the rule of thumb holds true (10*=1% HP gained or lost) this simple fix could save as much as 20-25HP at WOT on the track.

Thanks guys. I think it will work out fine. I was going to wrap it with some heat barrier tape stuff I had left over from heat/noise proofing my interior, but due to unfriendly moisture conditions the sticky stuff didn't stick. Maybe down the road. I still need to come up with a cool cover for the TB for when its at shows or the track cooling down with the hood up. Don't need anything going down the tubes, LOL!
It is held at the back with 3M heavy duty Velcro and the hold down at the TB is a piece of 1/2" aluminum fuel line flattened at the end and the middle, with the appropriate screws and nuts. It is really solidly mounted , but I can have it off in a matter of seconds.
Give a red neck a few hand tools and ......... Im pretty sure that's how John Deere got started, LOL.

OK, I just went out for a test on the patent pending " Ultimate Cookie Pan Induction System" or UK ****, as I like to call it , LOL.
Huge difference in air temp. With the same warm up ( 2 1/2 mile loop ) and close to the same air temp, the UK **** only had a 4* increase in temp from a roll to 80mph. With the standard 3" ,breather top filter setup the same test showed a 22* increase across the pull. Id call that a successful addition to the old hot rod. On the two vids you can see that the MAP KPA didn't get any better though. Still showing a very slight restriction at 97-98 KPA. That might be due to how close the TB is to the hood. As far as I can tell ,its only 2 1/2" or so, but Im not going to be able to do anything about that one. The hood stays! LOL.
My AFR was pretty fat this time. I had enriched it from a commanded 12.8 to 12.3 and gone up by one # on WOT enrichment. It went pig fat on this last test to the 10.x range for a couple seconds, then settled around 11.8 to 12.2. Im going to lean it to 12.6 and I think that will be good.
Here is a link to the vids. One was last week with the regular filter .The next was about 30 mins ago with Uk ****.

20 degrees is huge. That ought to be good for a tenth or so.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I honestly think the spread will be much wider on a full pass. Both of those tests were 5 second hits. The cookie sheet specials air temp rose very slowly . The regular filters temp was still climbing steady when I let out of it. A cheap, simple project that will show a noticeable improvement, I think.

Looks great and works too! What about maybe spraying it with lizard skin to help keep the aluminum pan temp down.

Yea, I had some sound/temp deadener laying a round I was going to use , but the moisture had gotten to it. I will get around to it at some point. But for now, 0 dollar mods are all the boss will allow. Something about saving for Christmas stuff for the kids or something. She just doesn't have her priorities in the right place, LOL.

I had one on my old sbc, it worked well. I think it would be better on the new motor because its higher and would mate up with the hood better. Got it at allstar performance, I like the looks of yours better though

Makes me want to do something like that for my car, just to make sure it's getting fresh air now that I don't have the aero scoop.
