Default quarter tank of fuel necessary?

I've always heard that you need to keep a quarter tank of fuel after you modify the bucket for a walbro pump to keep the pump cool. Looking at my setup, I realize that the pump sits in a rubber container and has very little actual contact with fuel. OTOH, I have seen the fuel pump in an 89 Beretta burn out when my kid ran it out of gas. So, is the quarter tank 'rule' real or an old wive's tale?

It isn't for keeping it cool, it is to keep it from sucking air.

Thanks. That was my guess. Cooling comes from passing fuel through the pump. And this is why you want a sump on the tank of a race car. Bummer with a plastic tank.

This is good advice in general (i.e. with any fuel pump).
