Default T-56 Making Noise in 5th & 6th ony

The transmission is one of the modified viper units that I've had for about 6 years. I spoke with D&D about this and one of the guys claim that there is a TSB for noise. I looked online and only found a TSB for a noise in neutral. The fix is going to Castrol SynTorq, which is a slightly thicker oil that is supposed to quite some of the noises the transmission makes. I never found anything about noise in 5th and 6th.

Curious, has anyone ever heard of this or have any thoughts?

Great write-up.

My concern is, most of these guys are talking higher mileage cars. This transmission has 20k on it if not less... Does that change anything?

Pretty unlikely a 20k trans. would have immediately noticeable vibration and noise like a 120k trans.

Could be something else. I guess you'll know when it's torn down.

You say it has 20k miles on it but that's since it was modified. Doesn't mean the gears were replaced with new ones. They could have 200,000 original miles on the trans . When I tear them down I scrub them by hand in a parts washer, then put them in a vatt machine. If they still look dirty I scrub them again and vatt them again. After all that is done you can tell if the gear has began to pitt or show signs of discoloration. I always tell the customer that it will work fine but it might make noise down the road. Might night make noise in 10,15k miles but it will get there. I would pull the tail off and pull the gears out and thoroughly wash them. That SynTorq will be harder to wash so you might have to soak them for a while. Just a thought...

It was a brand new transmission from D&D. Only the input shaft was modified as far as I know.

Case looked new? Tail looked new? No signs of ever being installed before?

Mine whined in 5th and 6th most notably. When I took it apart the 5-6 driven gear came right off without to be pressed off. I've read the linked thread and the one within but mine has never never had a vibration like described. I guess I need to measure the journals.

Mine whines only in 6 th , I've assumed it's just the 6th gear bearing on the counter shaft gone bad, could it just be a bearing problem,
