Default Houston Area Cam Install Rates

What are the going rates for a cam install and tune at the shops in the Houston Area? I'm looking to get it done soon and just want to see how much I should have saved up. I called Gforce in Pearland and they quoted me $2000, which seemed a bit expensive. Really just trying to get an idea from some people who have had this done.

It depends what it is in. The cam, springs, oil pump, gaskets, push rods can cost almost a grand so labor for another grand is not all that expensive.

I know other shops in Houston that charge 3000 for their cam package. That's not a bad deal from a well known shop.

It's on a GTO. I figured $800-1000 to install and around 500-600 to tune. I have all the parts already.

You will most likely get quoted higher install prices with you having your own parts. The shop isnt making anything on your parts where normally they would make at least a little profit. The second reason is you may be supplying parts they are not used to using or parts they dont sell. If there is a problem related to your parts you will have to pay for labor again where most of the time if the shop supplied the parts they will eat the labor and stand behind a product they sell. When I still had a performance shop 99% of the time when a customer supplied their own parts there were usually issues, missing parts or wrong parts, etc. It took longer for the same job and netted less money in the end so I could easily see why some shops wont even allow customer supplied parts.

Personally I prefer to do it myself, there are good shops out there no doubt, but there is a personal level of satisfaction in doing your own work....There are so many writes up on this site, if you can read, you can do it...

It depends on exactly what you are going to do. If your installing a cam small enough that you can still use stock lifters and valve springs, you probably could get it done for alot less than 2-3 grand. You wouldn't have to pull the heads in that scenario, that is where alot of the labor is I imagine.

it's a little easier if you specify what all you wanted done. To most, a cam swap is just springs/push rods/cam . . .
