ok, so we were checking the neutral safety switch (I am using the switch provided with the B&M shifter). Car will only start in Park and Neutral, as expected, so the switch is working properly. However, when started in N, the wheels spin, as if it's in Drive. The car was in the air when we did it for safety reasons, but I assume that if the car was on the ground, it would have moved forward.

I double checked to make sure the shifter cable was adjusted properly, and it is. Is there some electrical thing we are missing? It seems very weird to me that the tires move if the transmission is in Neutral.

Any ideas?

Try it on the ground. The tires do turn a little in N if there is nothing holding them back.

I don't have a parking brake. And my issue is not that the tires need to be stopped, I was concerned that the car shouldn't be in gear when in N. I didn't want something to be wrong and fry my trans.

If they are barely rotating, where you could simply push with your foot and stop them, that is normal when in neutral.. If they JERK hard and spin where you cant stop them with mild friction, then your shifter is out of adjustment, probably down on the trans itself.

The tires should not move if in park, or just a very small amount, like 2-3 inches, until the park pin locks the trans output shaft in place.

I put my foot on the driver side tire (the only one that spins) and that caused the other one to spin. When my friend stopped the passenger tire with his foot, the driver tire spun hard enough that I couldn't really stop it.

I thought that it might be an issue with the shifter cable not being adjusted properly, but I was SUPER careful when I installed it. Just to be sure, I pulled out the cotter pin and checked that the little peg lined up with the shifter arm on the side of the trans. I ran though every gear and checked the peg in the holes in the arm. Every time it lined up perfectly.

It definitely does not move in park though.

I have no clue except to tell you what someone else did. Set it on the ground and sit in the seat and start it in neutral and see if it moves out on you. If it does, whoever did the transmission work either did something wrong or set something way too high or tight.

That's pretty normal for an automatic transmission when the wheels are off the ground. I would put the car on the ground and see if it moves, my guess is it won't.

Disconnect the linkage and manually put the trans in park. If you eliminate the shifter and the car still wants to move then its something in the trans.

My 4l60e does the same thing. When it's in neutral it doesn't move the car.
