Default Power requirements for the MSD 6ls-2

I've read the paper and the iPhone app's instructions and I've noticed that msd omitted the very important part about the power requirements needed for this unit. IE how many amps does it need to be fused for.

I plan to power it directly from the battery switched with a relay.

Also while I have you here can you direct me on identifying the ls1 vs ls2 style coil.

I just run it from any 12 bolt switch source.

The LS1 and LS2 coils are not a world of difference but my 6012 gives me an option to switch for LS1 or LS2 coils. Not sure what makes it special but I have read some different dwell times or something like that.

LS2 coils give a significantly hotter spark than the LS1 coils do. I'm not sure what the MSD box does differently when you select one over the other

Coil pacs are easy to identify, google is your friend

As for power, you are right, they don't mention what sort of power draw and as far as I know you are the first person to ask. Like Zones said just take it off a switched 12V source. Some people try to reuse the old ignition coil wire. You can do that if you make sure to bypass the ballast resistor. Been more than a few guys who had trouble from that mistake.

As part of my late 4cyl fox swap I have no such power source under the hood.

Time to make one. That's what I did on my mustang as the entire engine wiring was gone.

Exactly. But it needs to have short circuit protection for the appropriate load.

MSD boxes should not exceed 1.2 amps per 1000 RPM.

You can pull 12V off the starter if you have no other source.

You can pull a line off the starter to a lug mounted on the fire wall as a general 12 source. Many people mount their MSD box in the area of the glove box, you should be able to find a source there.

This is what MSD told me when I asked them the question. 1 amp per 1,000 RPM. I used a 10 amp fuse and have had NO problems. Eric L
