Default 1990 300ZX - Built LQ9

Purchased a junkyard 6.0L LQ9 to start with. Put together a package working with Andrew from Complete Street Performance.

And, the shopping commenced...

Bottom End:

Sealed Power 0.020" over flat top pistons
Sealed Power Rings
ARP Rod Bolts
ARP Main Studs
SLP Double Roller Timing Chain and High Flow Oil Pump
ATI Underdrive Damper
ARP Damper Bolt
Lunati Custom Grind Cam
New OEM Lifters
LS6 Valley Cover
New Gaskets/seals/etc

Top End:

Sent the 317 heads to Advance Induction for a full CNC Port treatment, as well as combustion chamber welding and reshaping to 243 specs (C5 Z06)
Manley Nextek dual Valvesprings
Ti Retainers, Hardened spring seats, Hardened locks, Viton Valve Seals
New Stock Rockers with Comp Cams Trunnion Bearing Upgrade
Hardened Pushrods
OEM MLS Headgaskets
ARP Head Studs
Target CR of 11.5:1
Fast 102 Intake Manifold
Fast 102mm Throttle Body
Fast Injectors

Time for some gratuitous Pics:

Heads before sending them out:

Block before any work: (In pretty bad shape)

Fast Injectors:

Lunati Cam:

Pictures of the parts at the machine shop the day they were dropped off.

Sealed Power Pistons and Rings:

Gaskets:

ARP Galore:

LS6 Lifter Tray/Valley Cover:

SLP Timing Chain and Pump:

ATI Damper:

Shipped the heads to AI:

Left all these parts at IDM Speed and Machine in Mayetta, NJ. IDM has treated me very well over the past 10+ years. Ed and Don really know what they're doing and I'd trust them with any job.

First order of business was washing and media blasting the block, it was then rough bored.

Then we got the heads back from AI:

Stopped back at IDM, dropped off the heads and checked out the status of the block. Block was torque plate honed to spec, getting ready for assembly...

Got some aftermarket valve covers:

Also got the new OEM rockers and Trunnion Upgrade Kit:

Stopped back at the machine shop yesterday. ARP mains were installed and block was line honed, ARP rod bolts installed and the big end of the rods were resized. Block has been painted, rotating assembly was installed, cam was degreed, and Piston to Valve clearances were checked. PTV it 0.201" with no head gaskets, OEM gaskets are 0.051" thick. That's healthy clearance, IDM considers 0.100" to be a minimum. The rest of the rotating assembly is going together today, should be picking up the engine either tomorrow or Monday.

Had an aluminum driveshaft made... Hardened steel input and output flanges, Spicer U-Joints, heat treated aluminum tube, fully balanced and 100% made in the USA. High quality parts here, none of the chinese crap some vendors sell. Rated to 750WHP in a 3500lb car on slicks.

In any event, that is where we are at for now. Once the motor is done the install can commence.

Looks like some nice quality work being done all around, kudos on that. Noticed you didnt notch the firewall, any foreseeable hood clearance issues or did you lower the mounting location like a few others have?

Mounting locations are at stock height, using the Z transmission, so no need to notch the firewall, and the hood fits just fine Thanks for the Kudos!

That block all cleaned up is one sexy bitch!!

Best of luck on the build and hope the car holds the power well and keeps you going for a long time to come.

I know its hard to say at the moment, but do you think the price tag of $900 for heads to AI is worth it? Do you like how they ported the heads in the runners and ect? Ive been debating. For just porting I can see $500-650 but $900 just seems steep.

I honestly can't say for sure. CNC porting is in a league above typical hand port jobs, but that comes at a price. We'll find out when it hits the dyno.

Cars looking good man. I'm with Rumble on this one, I like the coil location and may just borrow that idea as well lol. Did you buy the brackets or make them your self?

Mark me down as someone who loves the coil idea and plans on adapting it to my next project! ;-)

The car will be an animal. We have a shop car, a 1993 convertible, with a stock LQ9... LS6 cam/springs, trailblazer manifolds, LS2 intake, 2.5" exhaust, and the car has trapped 110MPH with 3.13 gears. The verts weight nearly 300lbs more than this car.

I would expect this car to go well into the 10s with slicks and a good driver.

We made the brackets in house. They work great for this application, but are not compatible with our A/C bracket. This car doesn't have AC so that's a moot point.

Those are Kooks headers for a TBSS, modified to fit in the Z. This build started before we partnered up with Kooks, so this is a bit of a 1-off. Our productio headers will be ready to ship early Sept.
