Default Exhaust for 72 nova

Having trouble finding headers at a reasonable price for swap...anything wrong with using stock exhaust manifolds...will it still sound good, lose power?
Thanks for your help.

most of the sound depends on the piping and muffler .yes you will leave power on the table .

Most people claim around 10 rwhp with longtube headers over stock manifolds.

Welcome to LS1tech! Have you seen the X-body build thread yet? It contains links to almost all the Nova (X-body) builds on here and is a great point of reference to see how other Nova guys dealt with all the usual hurdles.

As far as an estimated HP lose with manifolds, I would expect an all stock engine could gain ~10hp from LTs. But I think the gain is also in propotion to how build up the motor is. EI: a built high horsepower motor will gain more HP with the addition of LT headers.

For my '73 swap I was on a tight budget and bought a set of Ebay 3rd gen F-body (camaro/firebird) SS headers for $160. Then used a torch and a buddy to bend the headers to where I wanted them. Then I cut off the EGR ports and had a buddy TIG the holes closed. It was more work then buying a purpose made set, but I saved $600+. No issues with them in 2500 miles last summer. Check out my build thread for more detail.

What are you Nova guys using for the exhaust system, ie. after the headers.
Built exhaust systems, shop, home made or just open headers!

A good pair of LS swap headers for my nova would have cost me $750 after a coating or wrap. When I learned that I could get a turbo and my entire hot side/exhaust for that price, I went that route instead. Since I was already doing tons of upgrades/fixes, the price difference between turbo and N/A was almost nothing.

seb, I bought a full 3" Pypes kit with x-pipe and their Racepro mufflers. It took me a little bit to warm up to the sound, but I have fallen in love with it (maybe I'm just smitten over the T56), and everyone says the car sounds great. I had to have the exhaust cut short and semi-customized for my rear suspension though - it dumps just behind the rear axle.

FYI, they claim their Racepros are their quietest mufflers.

Do you have any sound clips? I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with mine once it's together.

Interesting Hookem, I have the Pypes No-Muffler System with Borla Pro XS mufflers on my wish list on Summit. This is very good to know, and I think it makes it perfect to be exact.

Keep rubbing on the T56 swap, one day you might start the car and find out that the T56 has made it all the way across the country to my house, just saying.
