Default steering me right..

Last years setup was a 5.3 with a g5x1 cam, carbed, 3.55 gears, with a hundred shot. I ran a 11.7 @ 114.

I just bought a 2001 6.0 for this year, and im not into extensive machine work so I have a few questions if you have the time....

should I run the 317 heads or swap them off for the 806 heads I have floating around.

whats the biggest lift cam I can run without fly cutting.

thanks

Which 6.0? The 317s have the same ports as the LS2/LS6 243 heads, but the CCs are larger. If its the higher compression 6.0, Id stay with the 317s. If its the lower comp one, it is a little trickier. More compression vrs better head flow. I would probably have the 317s milled, if you have the dished pistons. I know you don't want to do any machine work, but the extra compression would be worth the effort and $.

If you're swapping heads around anyway then it can't hurt to freshen up the sealing surfaces on the heads. I think it was less than 2 bills to get my heads resurfaced when I had a head gasket leak. Definitely wouldn't call that extensive machine work.

Need a lot more info to talk about cams. All about the ride, intended use, trans, spray?, compression, etc,etc,etc......Then its best to call on someone in the LS cam business and ask them, LOL.
Throw the specs out though. A few of us love to blurt suggestions out, based on the limited knowledge we possess.

The duration is going to be a bigger factor than the lift, from a fly cut standpoint. You wont really need a lot of lift anyway with the stock heads, because the flow stalls out before .600. The head milling will have to be factored into the cam choice too. Any reason you are shying away from fly cuts? Its a DIY deal, if you aren't afraid to try it and shouldn't be too hard to do. If you are going something close to max effort and not worried about idle, Id get with one of the cam gurus on this forum, get them to grind a cam to make some power and fly cut the pistons for the cam. That being said , I wouldn't go too crazy on duration unless you are spraying right out of the hole. A 3500lbs car and 3.55 gears, along with the low compression will be pretty sluggish off the line, even with the 4K stall, with a cam that's large ( high 230s-low240s), IMO. The long duration is going to make for a weak low-midrange, peaky engine because the dynamic compression will be low. If I were to throw a number out there, Id say high 220s intake, mid 230s exhaust on a 110 with some lead built in to get things happening down low, and keep the lifts in the mid-high .5s for long spring life. Again, there is much knowledge to be had by calling someone who does this everyday and get them to spec a cam for you. Good Luck!

FYI I have LQ4 with .030 milled 317 heads and what I think is a small cam 233/240 .618-.589 109 separation hauls *** in my 2700 lb truck. This probably dosent help you with anything but at least you know you can go that big with no PTV issues. I think I put 7.035 pushrods in too.
