Default '71 Chevelle Convertible Trans Crossmember

Hello,
I have done a lot of searching and haven't really found an answer that I am looking for. I purchased a GForce crossmember and the perch shoves the transmission case into the floorboard. The car has an LQ4 with an LS style 4L60E and Dirty Dingo motor mounts. Anybody have any luck modifying a stock one, or know of another brand that would work fairly easily with minimal modifications?

I used the stock crossmember in my 69 convert with LS1 and 4L60. Had to move crossmember about 2 inches, but for the life of me, I can't recall if it went back or forward. I think there were already holes in the frame rails for different trans options.

Sounds great, too bad I don't have the stock original crossmember. I will do my best to locate one. Been having a hard time with that too.

I think people flip the stock one and cut and reweld the perch, or at least they do for T-56s. Might try just having a local guy make you a new one. Can't be that hard for someone that knows how to weld.

Thank you chuckd71, I will look into that also, this is the only major holdup we've run into on this project. Appreciate your help.

I used the stock crossmember for the TH400, sectioned the center and dropped the mount 2". This gave me plenty of clearance for the exhaust and created proper drive shaft angle.

Man, if that is your only major holdup the swap sounds like a dream come true. Let us know what you figure out.

I guess I better hunt one of those down. Is your car a convertible? I will post a pic of what I have and might have to make work tomorrow.

Thank you for the offer, I am not sure if there is a difference but I believe there is. There is a convertible frame under this car and it isn't a convertible. I believe they use a shorter crossmember. I will hit you up if I need yours, really appreciate the offer and all of the help.

I think the only difference is the convert. has a boxed frame compared to a hard top. Only the mounting bolts are different.

I think El Caminos and convertibles have basically the same frame, might be mistaken.

Here are a few pics of the current crossmember. We are having another one manufactured with the mounting pad a little lower. Does anybody know if there is a shorter transmission mount that might buy another 1/4 to 1/2"?

I will update again as soon as we get the crossmember.

Mine is a 1970 convertible frame with a coupe body on it...I am running a ls3 with a 4l80e using the stock location holley adapter plates. This is what I did to modify the stock cross member to work with the 4l80e.... http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...390327&page=14

That is a great job modifying the stock crossmember. I wish I had one to modify. What we ended up with is a slightly tweaked crossmember from GForce. It fits perfectly now.
