Cool t56 2.66 or 2.97 gear set??

Hey guys iv done alot of research and tried to find somthing that I would like with my setup with out having to change trans or rear gears..

My setup is a 600 rwhp na engine and around 850-900 rwhp with spray.. have a Dana s60 with 3.54 gears..

Car is a 2000 ws6 full weight(for now) going be mostly street and about 40% track.. I have the 2.66 gear set now.. and loved it with my 383.. but with new bigger power and spray somtimes I having hard time trying to choose which gear will give me...

1.beSt traction at track and street
2. Won't bog my engine down
3. Don't care about mpg much
4. Don't want to have to shift to 5th in the 1/4
5. Want to get the car moving for a decent 60 ft..
6. Running a 26" slick right now..

Any input will be greatly appreciated.. also curious what my trap speed will be in 4th on the different ratios..thanks guys

With the 3.54 rear I would say the 2.97 would be the best. My last setup had a 3.27 1st with 4.10 rear and it was too short. New setup has 2.97 but I wish it was 2.66.

Okay Do u know what my trap speed will be in 4th? Roughly... Also I doubt I change the rear gear.. iv read alot and boosted cars like the 2.66 gear so they can keep there spool up between shifts.. and or change to a auto.. I guess idk how short the 2.97 will be...

They both have the same 1:1 4th, so no difference top speed at track in 4th...tire size and rearend will affect that. 2.97 better at strip ie launch easier with more gear multiplication and 2.66 better traction on street because of less gear multiplication, hope that helps.

Sounds like you're more concerned with track performance. In that case the 2.97 is best choice specially if you use a 28" slick.

SSStang...u say the 3.27 w 4.10 was too short. How tall of a tire were u running? im doing a ls in my 90 lx and im running the tremec 3550 with 4.10s and 28s. I do plan on spraying 150-200 on it also. were u all motor? or power adder? thanks in advance. I have a 3.55 & 3.73 gears also but prefer the 4.10

The 2.66 ratio is technically stronger.... the gear spacing IMO is better as 1st gear is super short with the 2.97 ratio.

I do want to do good at the track. And have a good 60 ft.. but hoping get close or even hit the 160 mark in the 1/4... i have a 26" slick right now not a 28..can use 28s later.. I do want to have fun on the street tho.. Luke my old setup on my 383.. A 10 mph roll with mike drag radials I pulled on a bike after I hit second. It hooked well.

The 2.66 is a better choice I think. the 2.97 is meant for really heavy cars with 3.23 or lower gears to get going.

Assuming 6600 redline a 28" tire will get you 155 in 4th. 26" will get you 144.
If you really want 160 at in the 1/4 I suggest a 3.23 rear and the 2.97 gear. With a 26" tire the 3.23 will get you 158 and the 2.97 will help with the 60' on the 3.23 gear.

However, if you are on spray off the line the 2.66 will be just fine.

How heavy do you consider heavy? I have a full weight car with a roll cage.. and I might have to get a 28" tire then will this help my 60 ft with the 2.66 or with the 2.97? I'm going to spray 200 hit.. debating on hitting from the line or in second.. I do want to have a fun street car.. I want it to be able to hook when having drag radials on the street. I don't like blowing off tires. I like grip. I absolutely don't want to hit 5th in the 1/4...

Also another note.. red line will be 7000

The 2.66 is better for traction for sure. With 600whp N/A you'll get moving just fine.

The 28" tire and 7k redline will net you 165 in 4th with a 3.54 rear. The 2.66 gearset like gnx7 said is a better ratio set in general.

26" tire with same above numbers gets you 153.

Top speed per gear 26"
1st 58
2nd 86
3rd 118
4th 153

Top speed per gear 28"
1st 62
2nd 93
3rd 127
4th 165

^ would make for a killer 0-60 time. Assuming you don't bog or spin.

In 4th the ONLY difference is the tire. Both ratio sets are 1:1 in 4th. Those numbers are with the 2.66 set.

2.97 set 26"
1st 51
2nd 74
3rd 107
4th 153

2.97 set 28"
1st 55
2nd 80
3rd 115
4th 165

Play here http://www.f-body.org/gears/ 93 F-Body M6/3.23 for the 2.97 ratios(only right for 1-4, 5/6 are different) and the 98 F-Body M6 for the 2.66.

So keep the 2.66 gearing? Use spray out of the hole and use 28" tire and if fast enough.. suspension.. motor.. traction.. ect.. I can possibly hit 160 in 1/4?

Quick Reply: t56 2.66 or 2.97 gear set??
