i thought this was possibly a rod then a collapsed lifter. turned out to be a cam lobe and roller on that lifter. id start with pulling the cam out and check it if its not too much work over just yanking the whole motor.

check oil yet?

Dude my LQ4 did the same thing. Ran normal, oil pressure was fine, no CEL. I thought it was an exhaust rattle. Even 2 shops couldn't tell exactly. Oil was clean, filter was clean, but it had some shavings after it was torn down.

Well pulled the heads last night and all looked good. I then drained the oil and cut the filter. Someone had removed the magnet off the tip of the drain plug so once I saw that i knew it wasn't going to be good. Filter was covered in brown flakes. Motor will be going back to reher morrison or possible kotzur racing heads in San Antonio. Anyone ever use Kotzur?

There was never a magnet on the drain plug on that car. All lifters, valves, pushrods, etc were replaced about a year ago. Sounds like a rod knock, knew there was a reason they knocked 10,000 off the price of the car originally. Good luck with it!
