flycutting stock pistons
i want to learn how to flycut pistons on an ls1 to fit these larger cams like the trex, in case i have to. i heard you can do it by pulling the heads off and keeping the block in the car. any input?

i saw cartek do it at their shop...not sure which tools they use but they basically look like 2 valves with carbide ends...they used an old head for use as a guide and an air drill to just cut enough out of each piston...pita job but it works but then they pull the motor for crap like that.

i've seen the two pieces on www.iskycams.com, the notching pilot and the notching cutter. which ones do i need? they have several different part numbers. so then i need an old head i guess? how do i know how deep to cut? how do i guage how far i am cutting? someone said something about needing clay, but didn't say what for. i am guessing that i would use the clay to seal off the gap between the edges of the piston and the cylinder walls, to keep out the metal shavings, correct? i still need alot more answers

the clay is used to check the piston to valve clearance after you cut, to see how far you've cut, and if you need to cut more. quick synapsis: slap thin peice of clay on piston where valve would hit, put on head, snug it down. turn engine over one complete cycle(2 turns on the crank) pull head off, measure how thick the smushed clay is.
